Tips to Help Little Actors Get Into the Character

Acting is more than just knowing your work, knowing your lines, rather. It is embracing the character as a whole. Nothing can feel more riveting for an actor, and nothing can be more overwhelming than when the director yells for the first time—‘Action’. A gush of anxiety and happiness would be an understatement. An under-feeling, if that even exists, says a student of one of the best acting schools in India.

Quite obviously, an actor can’t simply begin a scene emotionally empty. Have a look at the tips to help you get into the state of mind!

  • One story, One Line: Make up a story one line at a time. Pick up any random theme and build yourself around it. One, or maybe a few more lines at a time. Don’t write a verse, don’t do a thesis. Practise it with a friend or a sibling. Clear the mind of all distractions and anxieties and see how it works for you, says a trainer of a film school.

  • Play Cards: Yes, Yes! Play cards. Or simply put up alone. Do anything that helps you gather yourself around the character. Young actors often draw on the mood around them and draw their narratives from their own life experiences. Engage yourself in something funny or social so as to ease out on the affair. Breathe, take it easy. Just easy enough for you to not freak out, though!

Young actors find it particularly hard to chalk out strategies and perform in their periphery. Experienced actors know better of all the rituals and ways to sail through the same, though. Kids, well, they may have their advantages and disadvantages of being kids. While kids know how to play around with their natural strengths, they sometimes falter in areas they know nothing of. But one must always remember to play around their natural strength.
