Making a documentary can be a great learning as well as exciting experience. The effort you pour into its making not only forces you to be creative but also shines bright on your resume. All filmmaking schools usually teach their students the essentials of documentary making as well. Even if you didn’t attend one, make sure you make a documentary that forces the viewers to think deeply. An empty or meaningless documentary would have no impact.
2. Not choosing the subject wisely
The success of your documentary greatly depends on the subject you choose. A boring topic which people can’t connect to would not draw much attention from the crowd. Take your time to analyse a couple of shortlisted topics before you actually start shooting. You could probably do a small survey to understand the tastes and preferences of viewers.
3. Improper planning
A lack of effort clearly and always reflects in the end result. If you fail to make all-out efforts- be it in planning or the execution of plans- that would reflect in your documentary.
4. Using bad camera
A professional camera is not the only prerequisite. You must also know how to properly use it. There is no dearth of good photography courses in India. Enrol yourself in a good one to hone your photography and videography skills.
5. No clear vision
Taking action without a clear vision in mind would serve no real purpose. While others’ interests are important for the success of your documentary, your passion is equally important. Making a documentary on an issue you strongly feel about will surely make a dent.
