Portraits are powerful and can evoke old memories, transport you to a different era, or bring out your innermost emotions. However, it takes time, effort, and training to learn the art of capturing the perfect portrait. While sound technical knowledge is a must, the following easy tips can help you enhance the quality of portraits:
1. Eye contact
Eyes are the probably the most expressive feature of our face that can convey what’s in the depths of the heart without words. Eye contact with the lens of the camera can add a new dimension to the photo. In fact, you could make the photo even more impactful by bringing down the camera to the subject’s eye level.
2. The right light
As you must have learnt or will eventually learn in a photography institute, the right amount of light can make all the difference to a photo. When shooting outdoors, try using the warm, golden light of the sun just after sunrise or just before sunset to get the best shots.
3. Pose it right
The impact of the photo also depends on the body language and pose of the person being captured. A person standing or sitting uncomfortably with hands framed on the side would not get a good shot. If the person being shot is standing stiffly, use your creativity as a photographer and give directions to make the body language of the person more fluid.
4. Use props
This is not necessary but use of simple props that do not take away the attention from the subject could be used to make a portrait more interesting.
